brian switzer and esther mildenberger founded the studio for visual communication in 2001 with partners in milan and berlin. today the studio collaborates with a network of select partners in the areas of photography, coding, manufacturing and printing.

brian switzer (m.des., b.f.a.) is professor for visual communication design at the university of applied sciences in constance, germany. he earned his bachelor’s degree of fine arts in graphic design at the university of illinois in urbana-champaign and his master’s degree in human centered design and strategic design planning at the institute of design, illinois institute of technology, in chicago. his career as designer and brand strategist took him to metadesign in berlin and london, future brand in london, icon medialab in london and milan, to siemens design group in munich and wgbh design in boston. before he became a professor, he taught information design and typography from 2003 until 2005 in urbana, dessau and zürich.

esther mildenberger (dipl.-des., m.a.(rca)) is a cultural designer with a focus on editorial, interaction and speculative design. after earning her undergraduate degree in graphic design at the university in pforzheim, she worked at metadesign in berlin. her master’s degree at the royal college of art in london emphasized artistic, research and experimental work and methods, and set path for her career at many renowned design agencies. these include pentagram, mccann-ericson and metadesign in london. she also executed numerous independent projects. as founding partner of envision+ she collaborates with architects, artists, institutions and communities of various sizes. esther has been teaching typography at the f+f in zurich (2006/2007), editorial, corporate and speculative design at the university of applied sciences in constance (since 2015) and experience design at salzburg university of applies sciences (since 2023).
